the following gallery consists primarily of science-fiction and fantasy images, but includes other examples of commercial illustration in a similar sytle. organised into three sections - colour, greyscale and black & white (line art) - the illustrations were done in a variety of media and for a range of publication methods; more on this subject is described below, along with a few words on my influences. |
|
each thumbnail image in the gallery is a link to a full-sized version of that illustration. the size of each image is listed in the table, after the title. in some cases there is also a link to a larger version of the illustration, so it can be viewed in greater detail. (this is especially recommended with Datamonger ID Kit v.1.5.1, Lord of Chaos and Coroners.) |

although i still do most of my drawing by hand, i make extensive use of the computer. all files are scanned, and can be delivered via email attachment, FTP or burned onto CD-ROM. black & white line art can be prepared as bitmap images (TIFF) or converted to paths (EPS); the latter facilitates re-sizing, as it is infinitely scalable. for greyscale and colour work, i do all-digital painting - including the incorporation of elements modelled and rendered in 3D software. i also make extensive use of photography, and other elements of "digital mixed-media". when preparing colour illustrations for four-colour process printing (as opposed to work intended for the web), i use an all-CMYK palette to ensure colour fidelity. |

over the past two decades, many artists have influenced the way i draw. in the early 1980s, two illustrators named Jeff Dee and Bill Willingham were producing work for TSR's "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" line, at about the time i was teaching myself how to draw... to this day, i can still see their influence in my lines. even stronger influence came from comic books, and as a student (both high school and art school) my drawing drew inspiration from the work of John Byrne, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jamie Hewlett, Mike Mignola (whose Hellboy remains my favourite), Moebius, Ted McKeever, Masamune Shirow, Evan Dorkin and especially the incomparable Geof Darrow. from the point of view of design, i have long been in awe of Dave McKean and try to learn from him without clumsily copying his style. and where comic book illustration meets fine art are Kent Williams and Jon J Muth, whose work encouraged experimentation beyond the pencil and pen. |
