DISASTER IN
MANHATTAN
Below are two maps, each of a stretch of Manhattan Island in
New York City from the Hudson River (on the left side of the
map) to the East River (on the right), from about 88th
Street (at the top of the map) south to about 50th Street
(at the bottom). For those unfamiliar with the layout of New
York City, there is also a map HERE
showing where this section is in relation to the city as a
whole... If you want to see the actual path the crashing
starship travelled, there is a GIF animation
HERE
that shows that; give it a couple minutes to load, since
it's about 900Kb. And HERE
is a page that recaps the story of what happened (ie, the
post i sent to GURPSnet).
This first map shows the destruction caused by the starship
and its final resting place east of Central Park's southeast
corner. There is a key to the right, identifying the colours
used to show the damage. The dark purplish colour is used to
show that part of Manhattan which was actually crushed
and/or ground flat by the ship as it skidded across the
island. The destruction here is presumably nearly total and
absolute; nothing still stands. The red colour along the
north edge of the purple was not actually hit by the
starship, but was burned by the heat exhaust from the
thrusters. This probably incinerated the buildings closest
to the starship, and ignited any flammables in the rest of
the area. The dark green colour along the south edge of the
purple was also not hit by the ship; instead, it represents
the areas into which debris and rubble were pushed or thrown
by the starship as it moved west-to-east. And finally, the
starship itself is on the map - and to scale - where it
eventually stopped. The ship is 400 yards wide, more than
1200 yards from nose to rear, and at 60 storeys tall is one
of the tallest structures now in New York.

This map is to show the
area as it was before the disaster, and to point out some of
the more famous landmarks in this section of town. Those
that were destroyed have their names highlighted in
blue.
