APPENDIX I: SLI Planetary Survey Vessel "Luvan" (TL10)

The Livingstone-class PSV is one of StarLight Industries'
older ships, having been phased out to make way for the
Byrd-class Planetary X-plorer Systems (PXS). The reason for
the change-over is due more to revision of corporate policy
than the function of the PSVs; PSVs typically carry only 2-6
scientists, but new directives are leaning toward larger
crews (including non-science personnel). Even so, there are
thousands of PSVs in service across the Alliance, and they
will no doubt continue to be popular ships for years to
come.
The PSV is just shy of 50 yards long, and has an
unimpressive-looking boxy exterior. Inside, it is all
function over form as well. Roughly one-quarter of the PSV's
volume is occupied by its 120 mW fusion plant, its
Anti-Matter pion manoeuvering drives and its Warp Drive
capable of achieving 1.28 pc per day - impressive for a ship
its size. Another fifth of the ship's volume is a vehicle
bay for its atmosphere-capable shuttle-craft (60 tons, 9500
cf, no FTL drive). The rest of the ship houses the tools
necessary for planetary surveying, including powerful
sensors, well-stocked workshops and laboratories, and 5,000
cf of storage. Personal space is limited, lab space is
adequate, and the most coveted work-space on the ship is the
roomy astrophysics facility in the aft turret.
The PSV was designed using the starship design rules from
"GURPS Space, Third Edition". Its two workshops are for
Mechanic and Electronics, primarily equipped for the
manufacture and/or repair of sensors, computer instruments
and robots. Its ten laboratories are dedicated to the
following ten science skills: Astronomy, Bio/Chemistry,
Ecology, Geology, Meteorology, Paleontology, Physics,
Planetology, Surveying and Xenobiology.
